Across the Sea

This weekend was, perhaps, the best I’ve experienced thus far in Korea. It was one of those wonderful spring weekends–the first truly warm, sunny weather after months of frigid temperatures. However, I couldn’t shake the horrific imagery from the disaster in Japan. The near-perfect weather and smiling faces were a chilling reminder of the fragility of our civilization.

While it would not be accurate to say “It could have happened here,” (Korea is seismically inactive), it is scary to think how a fluke of geology devastated a vast swath of Japan, while we are here, across the East Sea (or Sea of Japan, if you prefer) completely unscathed. Indeed, it was more dangerous to be on the U.S. West Coast, than it was to be on the Korean Peninsula.

I guess I don’t really have much more to say on the subject. I’ve been glued to the steaming online coverage on the BBC, so the enjoyable long walks with Sydney were necessary to get my mind off the disaster. We walked for over 5 hours this weekend, with two separate trips to Olympic Park.

I hope spring is finally here, and for Japan to recover as quickly as possible.
